Entrevista: Mad Professor

And also we have the interview in English!

Pedais & Efeitos: Hi Harri! Thank you very much for giving us this interview! Mad Professor has been on the market for quite some time, right? Can you tell us about the beginning of this journey?

Harri: I started in music business 1996 when I formed my distribution company called Custom-Sounds. It was one of the first companies in the world focusing only to boutique and custom guitar gear, mostly effects. I also had website back then and sold all around the world. After 6 years I had an idea of my own production and started first making amplifiers and later pedals with my friend Jukka who is an electronic engineer.

Pedais & Efeitos: What was the first pedal produced and marketed by the brand?

Harri: The first pedal we made was Little Green Wonder and we are still making that pedal.

Pedais & Efeitos: How does your new product development process work? How long does it take from the beginning of the process until the product is available to the public?

Harri: It takes about 7-12 months from the first prototypes into final product in the shops. There is a lot of work and we are very careful with our design and manufacturing.

Pedais & Efeitos: How many people work at Mad Professor?

Harri: We have 4-5 full-time workers and then we use a lot of outside services.

Pedais & Efeitos: I see few people talking about the (great) amplifiers of Mad Professor. How many models do you produce today?

Harri:Today we have the Old School 21RT and Old School 51RT as head and a combos, we also make few guitar cabinets.

Pedais & Efeitos: In the pedal line you have the Hand Wired series and the Factory series. I know the assembly process is totally different but in terms of sonority? Is there a superiority of one line over the other in terms of sonorities?

Harri: We first made everything by hand, but as the production quantities got bigger we stated to produce them own a factory to get faster production. Soundvice they are pretty much the same and both are very high quality. The hand wired is bit easier to service, but we made the pedals to last a lifetime.

Pedais & Efeitos: What is the best pedal of the Mad Professor and what is your favorite pedal? (Can be manufactured by you or another manufacturer).

Harri: Everyone has their favorite and mine is changing all the time. But mostly you see the Forest Green Compressor, Dual Blue Delay and Royal Blue Overdrive on my board.
The best selling pedals we have are Sweet Honey Overdrive and Golden Cello.
I really like the old vintage Fuzz Face pedals and Boss Dimension C is a great pedal.

Pedais & Efeitos: And what is the pedal made by you that has not yet been “discovered” by the public? The one who has a killer sound but has not had the recognition deserved yet.

Harri: I would say the Stone Grey Distortion, it is not just a distortion but also great mild overdrive and boost.

Pedais & Efeitos: Brazil has a great market and its pedals for a while were available in our country. Are there any importers still bringing the pedals? If there is not, do you sell directly here or do you have any plans to have the pedals being sold here?

Harri:We do have Loud Music Imports doing the distribution and they have 15 dealers, so the pedals are easy o find in Brazil.

Pedais & Efeitos: In Brazil you have the great Tatiana Pará as artist and partner of the brand. How did this happen? And is there interest in expanding this partnership with other Brazilian artists?

Harri:We have met Tati and her sister at NAMM show, but our co-operation stated earlier. I believe it was Tatiana who was active and we have been very happy that she has helped us over there and made great videos. Sure we would love to work with other Brazilian artists.

Pedais & Efeitos: And what about the Mad Professor next projects? Can you anticipate some exclusive news?

Harri: I can tell you that we will publish next a new pedal that is based on a amplifier circuit, just like the Big Tweedy Drive and Little Tweedy Drive. Those pedals and the new one has whole amplifier circuit build into a pedal, there is preamp, phase splitter, power amp and even transformer is modeled analogically. So not just the tone is the same, but also the feel is same and the pedal reacts just like the real amp.
The new is based on old four input Marshall, and as with the Tweed pedals we do own the amps these are based into.
We do have 10 vintage Marshall amps from 1963 JTM45 to 1973 JMP50.
The pedal will have some nice extra features.
We are also working with a new modulation pedal, that has many cool tones.

Pedais & Efeitos: Thank you for giving us this interview, Harri! Do you want to leave a message for our readers?

Harri: Take good care of yourselves and your tone and good luck to Brazil for Fifa Football World Championship!!
