Para conhecer um pouco mais sobre a marca, conversamos com o Nicolás Sabbadin. Confira o papo!

Pedais & Efeitos: Como e quando o Sabbadius Custom Effects começou?

Nicolás: Eu nasci em Córdoba, na Argentina, em 16 de agosto de 81. Comecei minha carreira na música como um “hobby profissional, quanto tinha 14 anos. Sou um grande admirador de Jimi Hendrix e Steve Ray Vaughan. Eu diria que eles são os dois artistas que mais me inspiraram na música e também recriaram os sons vintage nos meus pedais.

Eu cresci com a ajuda do meu avô, Carlos Fonseca, e da minha avó. Foi quando tudo veio junto. Carlos já estava construindo, montando e consertando radios valvulados e transistorizados e ele estava sempre me ensinando e me mostrando a montagem dos produtos e o uso de todos os componentes eletrônicos.

Com o conhecimento que eu tinha, meus amigos insistiram que eu deveria me especializar nos eletrônicos. Eu expliquei que eu queria construir pedais de guitarra e que havia uma demanda no mercado para isso.

Eu comecei comprando livros para iniciantes em eletrônica para aprender sobre resistores, capacitores, transistores e circuitos integrados.

Queria ver se eu poderia fazer uma engenharia reversa e clonar um pedal fuzz padrão, eu peguei emprestado um com um amigo. Os resultados foram muito bons. Então eu comecei investigando mais o circuito e trocando diferentes componentes como transistores, capacitores, etc.

Eu estava construindo pedais para vender entre 2001 e 2002. Em 2004 eu passei todo o ano fazendo um curso de electronica avançada e obtive a permissão para fazer pedais com a marca registrada SABBADIUS.

A marca SABBADIUS foi inspirada na minha mãe, Adriana Kogan, que combinou o sobrenome “Sabbadin” com “Stradivarius” para dar a qualidade para o nome e os produtos para os quais a marca SABBADIUS nasceu.

Depois de alguns anos, ganhei mais sabedoria testando muitos componentes eletrônicos de audio e começei a fazer melhorias nos meus produtos adicionando componentes de audio Hi-Fi.

 

Pedais & Efeitos: Qual foi o primeiro modelo a ser construído?

Nicolás: Meu primeiro modelo foi o 80´s Overdrive Tone: Um pedal overdrive analógico que produz um som bem morno e  sustento.

Ele vai desde um booster até um intense overdrive com excelente controle de tone. O 80´s Overdrive Tone não tira a cor ou o brilho do som da guitarra.

Pedais & Efeitos: Que pedais a Sabbadius fabrica atualmente? Você pode nos contar um pouco sobre cada um deles?

Nicolás: A Sabbadius fabrica pedais de distorção, fuzz, overdrive, boosters, envelope filter, um Univibe clone chamado Funky Vibe, entre outros. Veja a lista:

Pedais & Efeitos: Qual o seu favorito?

Nicolás: Meu favorito é o Mr. White II. Controle de volume com um pequeno booster “Cranck Up”que simula o estágio de saturação da válvula da Fender Vibroverb, Dumble, Bassman, Super Reverb. É um pedal especial para solos de guitarra leves ou simulação do tone de um amplificador valvulado com tubos à vácuo para vermelho e azul. Stevie Ray Vaughan usou um som bem ameno e muito brilhante, ainda que os médios harmônicos da guitarra sejam limpos e não tenham efeito. Neste pedal, você pod epode pegar este tone sem nenhum problema, e não há necessidade de dar ganho para encontrar aquele som único.

Pedais & Efeitos: Qual o pedal mais vendido da Sabbadius?

Nicolás: De um modo geral, todos vendem bem, mas hoje os que vendem mais são o Mr.White II, o 80 Overdrive Tone e o Black Distortion. 

Pedais & Efeitos: Quanto tempo dura o processo desde o desenvolvimento até o lançamento de um novo pedal?

Nicolás: Isso depende de vários fatores. Se eu encontrar os componentes aqui na Argentina pode demorar 3 meses. Se eu tiver que trazer os componentes de fora, entre 6 e 8 meses por cada modelo de pedal.

Pedais & Efeitos: Você é o responsável por todo o processo de fabricação e montagem? Ou você terceiriza alguns processos?

Nicolás: Sim! Eu faço todas as placas, montagem e projetos. Tenho algumas companhias que fazem a embalagem e a pintura, e outras companhias que fazem a impressão das embalagens.

Pedais & Efeitos: Você tem uma parceria com o guitarrista brasileiro Marcel Ziul. Como essa oportunidade surgiu e que pedais ele usa?

Nicolás: Isso! Eu conheci o Marcel graças ao Youtube. Foi aquele toque mágico! Então eu entrei em contato com ele e comecei a enviar emails para saber se ele estava interessado em usar meus pedais e endossá-los. Ele disse: Claro! Será um prazer usá-los. Então eu enviei o Mr. White II e quando ele recebeu e testou ficou surpreso com os efeitos e o excelente som que conseguiu com ele e seus amps Fender.

Pedais & Efeitos: Os pedais Sabbadius tem sido vendidos no Brasil. Você recebeu algum feedback? É um Mercado que interessa pra você?

Nicolás: Sim. Recebi bons comentários no meu canal no youtube e no facebook. Você sabe O Brasil é muito grande e eu sei que os produtos precisam de um tempo para serem conhecidos por aí. Agora, os clientes que tenho no Brasil são  impressionantes. Obrigado ao povo Brasileiro!

Pedais & Efeitos: How and when the Sabbadius Custom Effects started?

Nicolás: I was Born in Córdoba Argentina on August 16, 1981. I began my career in music as a professional hobby, at the age of fourteen. I´am a great admirer of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan and would say that they are the two artists that greatly inspired me in music and also in recreating the vintage sounds in my effects pedals.

I was raised with the help of Carlos Fonseca (step grandfather) and by my step grandmother and this is when everything came together. Carlos was already building, assembling and repairing tube and transistor radios and he was always teaching and showing me the assembly of the product and the use of every electrical component.

With the knowledge I was tough my friends insisting I should get educated in electronics. I explained that I wanted to build guitar effect pedals and that there was a demand in the market for this.

I started buying beginner books on electronics to learn about resistors, capacitors, transistors, and integrated circuits… to began building simple circuits. By simple I means, that the circuit was not very big and consisted of only a few electrical components.

Wanting to see if I could reverse engineer and “clone” a standard fuzz pedal, I borrowed one from a friend. The results were very good then I started investigating the circuit more and changed different components like transistor, capacitor types, resistor values etc.

I was constructing effect pedals for sale between 2001 and 2002, in 2004 I took a yearlong course in advanced electronics and obtained the permissions to make effect pedals under the registered trademark of SABBADIUS.

The SABBADIUS trademark was inspired by my mother, Adriana Kogan, who combined the surname “Sabbadin” with “Stradivarius” to gave quality to the name and products thus the brand SABBADIUS was born!

After a few years passed, gaining more wisdom and testing lots of audio electronics I started making improvements to my products regarding the aesthetics and by adding Hi-Fi audio components.

Pedais & Efeitos: What was the first model to be built?

Nicolás: My first model was the 80´s Overdrive Tone:
Analog overdrive pedal that produces a very warm sound and sustain.
It goes from a booster to an intense overdrive with excellent tone control.
The “80 Overdrive Tone” produces a lot of force and does not take away the color or brilliance from the sound of the guitar.

Pedais & Efeitos: What pedals to Sabbadius manufactures today? Can you tell us alittle about each?

Nicolás: Sabbadius manufacture distortions, fuzz, overdrive, boosters, envelope filter, Uivibe clone called Funky Vibe, among others.., this is the list:

Pedais & Efeitos: What is your favorite?

Nicolás: My favorite is the Mr. White II:
Volume control with a small booster “Crank Up” that simulates the saturation valve stage of the Fender Vibroverb, Dumble, Bassman, Super Reverb.
It is a special pedal for lifting guitar solos or simulating the tone of a valve amplifier with the vacuum tubes to the red and blue.

Stevie Ray Vaughan used a very warm sound and very bright and even mids harmonics on the guitar to be clean and had no effect. On this pedal you can get this tone with no problem and there’s no need to put up the gain to achieve that unique sound.

Pedais & Efeitos: What is the best-selling pedal of Sabbadius?

Nicolás: They are good seller in general, but today the ones that sales better is the Mr.White II, the 80 Overdrive Tone and the Black Distortion.

Pedais & Efeitos : How long does the process of development until the release of a newpedal?

Nicolás:  that depends in everything, If I found the components here in Argentina can be 3 month, and if I must get the components from outside the country between 6 to 8 months per pedal model.

Pedais & Efeitos: You are responsible for all manufacturing and assembly process? Orcan outsource some steps?

Nicolás: Yes, I make all the PCB´s, asembly and projects , I have some companies that make the enclosure and the paint, and some other companies that makes the printing on the enclosure.

Pedais & Efeitos: You have a partnership with the Brazilian guitarist Marcel Ziul. How did this opportunity and what pedals he uses?

Nicolás: Yes, hehehe, I met Marcel thank´s Youtube, I was searching for some new pups for one of my guitars and I found a video from Marcel making a review of the Van Zandt pickups, and I think the way he play the guitar…, was that magic touch, so I contact him asap, I started to send mails to him too see if he was interesting to use my pedal´s as an endorser, and he proudly said: OK, sure, I will be glad to use your pedal´s, so I sent him the Mr. White II and when he receive and test the effects he was surprised the great sound he can get using this pedal with his Fender amps.

Pedais & Efeitos: The pedals Sabbadius has sold to Brazil. You have received somefeedback on their Brazilian guitar pedals? It is a market that interests you?

Nicolás: Yes, I receive very good comments on my youtube channel and Facebook, You know Brazil it´s very big and I think that I need some time to my products to be knowed at all Brasil, but for now the customers I get from Brazil,. the feedback was awesome. Thank you for that Brazialian people;)
